Not all submissions are that successful...

The canvas is corrugated and shows through...

For the contest that involved a live model, let me show you the best and the worst...

Hwa Seng Textiles was an exhibitor at the conference. When I saw the shirred sleeveheads of Hwa Seng's boss, I took this pic and asked him if he got it made in Naples. "It was made in Singapore," he gleefully replied.

There were three sessions in the live model contest. The first was the measurement taking session. The second was the first fitting. The third is where the altered jacket is put on the model on-stage to be passed final judgement.

Here you see the Korean fitter during the first fitting

Day 2 was a day of great activity. At least three things were going on simultaneously: A Korean was lecturing about pattern-making for the Neapolitan style of jacket, the contesting teams from the various countries were busy sewing, and Mr Liang from Taiwan -- the man who submitted the 1st prize display jacket -- was giving a demo on coatmaking.

The man seated in the center is Mr. Liang.

On the night of Day 3, a bunch of us Malaysians wanted to go see the new casino at Marina Bay Sands. It was 11:30 p.m. and I was waiting in the lobby for the others when one came down and told us that Mr. Liang is doing a patternmaking master class in the room of one of the Singaporean tailors. We abandoned our casino plans and stormed the room. The class went on to 1:30 a.m.

Mr. Liang's own jacket was on the bed. I subjected it to intense scrutiny. The chest is soft -- body canvas was used as chestpiece. The shoulders were heavily padded.

Day 4 dinner, I saw that the Korean tailor was wearing his linen display jacket. It was too big for him, especially in the hips. But I couldn't resist having a picture taken with him.

This was the farewell night dinner. Here the Koreans singing us a farewell song.

Wow, Monsieur kotmj, how did you get invited to this event?

By handing over a tonload of money...

...and by being in the trade.

There's nobody there who isn't in the trade.

Day 3 dinner was a black tie event with a fashion show thrown in. It was a reaaaaly long fashion show.

Posted Image

Random Singaporean A-list celebs. The evening felt better for me because of them. Otherwise it would have just been a roomful of old tailors.

The entire event was organized exceedingly well. It's surreal, now that I think of it, to be waited on by successful proprietors of tailoring businesses sporting Hermes Birkins and solid gold Pateks. The level of energy the organizers displayed was astounding. I'm so glad I was invited to join.

The lapels on the Korean blow the 1st prize submission outta the water. I really like the set of the collar too. I think opening the quarters a little more would really set off the hip suppression and windowpanes, though. It's a very Italian look already, anyways.

She's also very pretty.

Very polished. I think the best job between G's and my writeup.
