Do you want to take a punt with a Kickstarter campaign of a Biotar 75mm f1.5? https://www.kickstar...ref=nav_search

Too rich for my blood... I also rarely shoot anything longer or shorter than 40-50mm.

Canon 50/1.5 in M39 mount. This is a copy of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 50/1,5 originally made for the Contax rangefinder camera system. Solid brass, beautifully chromed. Bought it last year.

I also have the Canon 135/3.5 in the same mount. Very beautifully made.

is there a dramatic drop in sharpness near the edges, near the swirly bits?

No there isn't. The out of focus behaves differently from the in focus. However, any lens of this age will have seen much handling and been repaired by all sorts of people. Mine is unsharp on one side. I learnt there is an eccentric collar around the rear lens group that you need to adjust to achieve uniform sharpness. I'll eventually get around to it.
